Klarna, the Swedish-founded payments network, expanded its Klarna Mollie partnership on 3 November 2026, adding enhanced dispute management and consumer foreign exchange for the more than 350,000 merchants that use Mollie, according to Klarna’s announcement. Fintechbits checked Mollie’s published UK price list: a Klarna transaction costs a merchant 4.99% plus £0.30 in the UK and Ireland, against 2.99% plus £0.30 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and 0.45% plus £0.20 for Mollie’s Pay by Bank. Neither company said whether those rates change under the new contract.

What the Klarna Mollie contract adds

The Klarna Mollie features will reach every Mollie integration, Klarna said: the direct API, the hosted payment page and the plug-ins Mollie offers through platform partners. Merchants who already take Klarna through Mollie get the new tools on their existing integration. Merchants new to Klarna can switch on Pay in Full, interest-free Pay in 3 and longer Financing at checkout.

Dispute management is the less glamorous half and probably the more useful one. A BNPL purchase that goes wrong involves three parties (shopper, merchant and lender), and smaller merchants tend to handle those cases by email. Consumer FX lets a shopper pay in their own currency, which matters for the cross-border sellers Mollie courts.

David Sykes, president and chief commercial officer at Klarna, described the model as “one integration, one agreement, global reach from day one.” Rogier Schoute, chief product officer at Mollie, said merchants can reach 26 markets through the integration they already use, with no extra development or new contracts.

Mollie after GoCardless

The reach comes from Mollie’s side of the table. The release credits Mollie’s combination with GoCardless and its coverage across all EEA markets with extending Klarna’s footprint, and Mollie describes itself as serving businesses in more than 30 markets. Fintechbits profiled GoCardless founder Hiroki Takeuchi in October, and the combined company now sells payments, accounts and business financing in one package.

For Klarna, partner distribution is the cheap way to grow merchant count. Klarna says it has more than 1.2 million retailers and over 120 million active users. Every acquirer or PSP that bundles Klarna saves its sales team a direct integration, and Klarna has been signing these deals at pace, including the easyShop rollout across 19 European markets that Fintechbits covered on 1 November.

The price merchants see under Klarna Mollie

Mollie’s price list is where the release stops. The 4.99% plus £0.30 UK and Ireland rate for Klarna is the same figure Mollie lists for Czechia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Romania and Spain, and well above the 2.99% German-speaking markets pay. France sits at 4.50% plus £0.30. Pay by Bank, which Mollie lists on the same page, costs a fraction of any of those.

That spread is the real pitch problem. A UK merchant selling a £100 basket pays £5.29 to take Klarna through Mollie, against 65p through Pay by Bank. Klarna’s case is that BNPL raises conversion and basket size enough to cover the gap. The new dispute tools help that argument at the margin, because a cheaper way to resolve a contested order lowers the hidden cost of taking BNPL.

The UK context adds a wrinkle. Buy now, pay later became FCA-regulated on 15 July 2026, as Fintechbits reported on the affordability rules, so Klarna’s UK checkout now carries regulated credit obligations that a Pay by Bank payment does not.

Why the Klarna Mollie fee table matters more than the feature list

Distribution deals like this are good for Klarna, and the dispute and FX features are reasonable additions, but the merchant decision turns on price. Mollie lists Klarna as one of the most expensive methods on its UK page, and the release gives no sign that the expanded contract cuts that cost. If Klarna wants Mollie’s long tail of small merchants to switch it on, the conversion uplift has to beat a fee roughly eight times the Pay by Bank rate on a typical basket. Klarna will also be measured against Pay by Bank inside Mollie’s own checkout, which is an awkward place to compete.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Klarna Mollie expansion add for merchants?

It adds enhanced dispute management and consumer foreign exchange to Klarna payments taken through Mollie. Klarna said the tools will reach Mollie’s direct API, hosted payment page and platform plug-ins.

Do existing Mollie merchants need a new integration?

No. Under the Klarna Mollie contract, merchants already offering Klarna through Mollie get the features through their existing integration, and new merchants can enable Klarna at checkout.

How many merchants does the Klarna Mollie partnership reach?

Mollie serves more than 350,000 businesses, according to both companies. Mollie says it operates in more than 30 markets following its combination with GoCardless.

What to watch next

The useful signal on the Klarna Mollie deal will be whether Mollie changes its published Klarna rates or adds a Klarna bundle for small merchants. Either step would show the expanded contract changed the economics, not only the feature set. A dated rollout for dispute management and consumer FX would also tell merchants when the tools actually arrive.
