Block, the owner of Square and Cash App, reported Block Q3 2026 gross profit of $3.24 billion on 3 November 2026, up 22% year on year, with adjusted operating income up 92% to $923 million, according to Block’s third-quarter shareholder letter. Block’s own investor site carries its September 2026 application to the OCC for Builders Bank & Trust, an uninsured national trust bank that would custody bitcoin and stablecoins and would not take deposits or make loans, but the Q3 letter, which reports bitcoin ecosystem gross profit down 50% to $52 million, does not mention the charter, Fintechbits found. Block had guided third-quarter gross profit to $3.13 billion, or 18% growth, in its second-quarter letter.
The Block Q3 2026 numbers
In Block Q3 2026, Cash App gross profit rose 27% to $2.07 billion and Square gross profit rose 14% to $1.16 billion. Square gross payment volume grew 14% to $76.4 billion, the fastest rate since the first quarter of 2023, with US volume up 10.4% and international volume up 26%. Cash App reached 60 million monthly transacting actives in September.
Block Q3 2026 profit measures diverged. GAAP operating income rose only 5% to $428 million, while adjusted operating income nearly doubled, with a record 29% margin. The gap is mostly $435 million of contingencies, restructuring and other charges, and Block says general and administrative costs rose 56% on a GAAP basis “primarily driven by increased accrued legal contingencies.” GAAP diluted earnings were $0.92 a share; adjusted diluted earnings were $1.13, up 109%.
Lending carries Cash App
Financial Solutions gross profit, mostly Cash App Borrow, grew 32%. Consumer lending originations rose 40% to $19.0 billion, and Afterpay Post-Purchase volume more than tripled. Block finished moving Borrow to a six-week loan structure in September, and held limits flat while it did, which cut originations per customer by 7% from the second quarter. The average Borrow limit is $300 against a maximum of $1,500, so there is room to lend more.
The bitcoin line in Block Q3 2026 went the other way. Bitcoin ecosystem gross profit fell 50% to $52 million, which Block attributes to “a strategic decision to reduce the fee we charge on certain bitcoin transactions.” Bitcoin still makes up $1.8 billion of quarterly revenue but a sliver of gross profit.
The outlook, raised again
Block now expects 2026 gross profit of $12.626 billion, up 22%, against $12.51 billion in its August guidance, and adjusted operating income of $3.519 billion. For 2027 it guides to gross profit growth of at least 15% to $14.519 billion and adjusted operating income of $4.575 billion. It also says its Buzz AI collaboration tool, sold through a new unit called Builderlab, should produce its first outside revenue in the fourth quarter.
Square’s momentum is real in payments, including the credit card it runs on the American Express network through Marqeta, which Fintechbits covered in October. Rival processors have been reporting too, as Adyen did with its Q3 update.
Fintechbits analysis
Why Block Q3 2026 is a lending and charter story
The beat is clean on gross profit, but the shape of Block is changing. Growth is coming from consumer credit and from Square winning sellers, while bitcoin is being priced for volume rather than margin. The Builders Bank application suggests where that ends: a regulated custody business for bitcoin and stablecoins rather than a trading fee line. That is a sensible plan, but investors should weigh two things the headline numbers hide: $435 million of charges in one quarter, much of it legal, and a credit book growing 40% a year.
