Ant International, the payments, foreign exchange and treasury technology company, said on 3 November 2026 that it had completed live Hong Kong dollar interbank transfers using tokenised deposits with Bank of China (Hong Kong), China Construction Bank (Asia) and HSBC under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s EnsembleTX pilot, settling in central bank money within five minutes, according to Ant International’s statement. Fintechbits read the HKMA’s 2 November 2026 notice: EnsembleTX has grown to 12 participating banks and 20 industry pioneers, and Ant International is one of three pioneers the regulator names, alongside BlackRock and China Asset Management (Hong Kong). The Ant International EnsembleTX transactions ran between September and October 2026.
What the Ant International EnsembleTX transfers did
Ant International initiated the transfers through WhaleRTP, its own settlement platform, using tokenised deposits issued by the three banks. Interbank settlement ran through the HKMA’s tokenised central bank money, and Ant says each transfer took under five minutes from payment instruction to final receipt.
The point for Ant is treasury rather than payments. Moving cash between its accounts at different banks around the clock lets it cut the money it pre-funds at each bank to cover merchant settlement, and so lower the working capital it needs. Kelvin Li, general manager of platform tech and senior vice president at Ant International, said the next step is what Ant calls agentic treasury, pairing real-time intelligence from its FalconTST product with WhaleRTP so that “the agent decides, and WhaleRTP executes.”
What the HKMA actually switched on
The regulator’s notice is the more important document. On 2 November 2026 the HKMA said EnsembleTX now supports interbank settlement of tokenised deposit transactions in tokenised central bank money on a 24/7 basis. When the pilot launched in November 2025 it used the HKD Real Time Gross Settlement system, and the HKMA said in its launch notice that the pilot would operate throughout 2026.
The HKMA lists the use cases as corporate treasury management and tokenised money market fund transactions. Its footnotes name five of the 12 banks: Bank of China (Hong Kong), China Construction Bank (Asia), ICBC (Asia), Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) and HSBC. Eddie Yue, chief executive of the HKMA, said that “in just two years, Project Ensemble has transitioned from experimentation and piloting” toward commercialisation.
A narrow pilot with big names
Twelve banks is a small group for a market of Hong Kong’s size, and the 20 pioneers include asset managers as well as payment firms. That is how a careful central bank tests settlement infrastructure: few participants, real money, controlled use cases. The Ant International EnsembleTX transfers follow two years inside the programme: Ant joined the Ensemble Sandbox in 2024 and the Ensemble Architecture Community in 2025, so these transactions reflect long preparation rather than a quick experiment.
The wider debate is whether tokenised deposits or stablecoins win the institutional settlement race. Fintechbits weighed where asset tokenisation adds value and where it is hype on 2 November, and Hong Kong is the clearest test of the bank-issued route.
Fintechbits analysis
Why Ant International EnsembleTX is a treasury story, not a payments story
The five-minute settlement figure is the headline, but the economic gain is pre-funding. A cross-border payments firm such as Ant parks cash at partner banks to settle merchants on time, and that cash earns little. Round-the-clock interbank movement in central bank money shrinks the buffer. It also strengthens Ant’s hand with merchants and wallets it connects through Alipay+, as in the DuitNow QR link Fintechbits covered. The catch is scale: the gain only matters once enough of Ant’s banks are in the network, and the pilot has 12.
Frequently asked questions
What is EnsembleTX?
EnsembleTX is the pilot phase of the HKMA’s Project Ensemble, launched in November 2025 for real-value transactions in tokenised deposits and digital assets. Since 2 November 2026 it supports 24/7 interbank settlement in tokenised central bank money.
Which banks took part in the Ant International EnsembleTX transfers?
The Ant International EnsembleTX transfers ran with Bank of China (Hong Kong), China Construction Bank (Asia) and HSBC between September and October 2026. The transfers ran through Ant’s WhaleRTP platform.
What do the Ant International EnsembleTX transfers save Ant?
Ant says round-the-clock interbank transfers let it reduce the cash it pre-funds at banks and lower its operating capital needs. It plans to automate treasury decisions with AI agents on the same rails.
What to watch next
The HKMA’s participant count is the number to track. Movement from 12 banks toward Hong Kong’s larger lenders, or the first tokenised deposit transfers settled outside Hong Kong dollar, would show EnsembleTX moving from pilot toward production. Ant publishing a figure for how much pre-funding the Ant International EnsembleTX setup has released would show whether the treasury case holds.
