The Motive Partners Mobius deal is closed. Motive Partners, the fintech-focused private investment firm, said on 27 October 2026 that it has completed its acquisition of Mobius, a UK pension investment platform, from Phoenix Equity Partners after receiving all required regulatory approvals, according to the announcement on BusinessWire. Fintechbits checked the seller’s own announcement: Phoenix Equity Partners said on 11 June 2026 that it had exchanged contracts subject to regulatory approval and that Mobius then had over £30 billion of assets under administration, against the more than £36 billion in Motive’s completion release.
What Motive Partners Mobius buys
Mobius serves more than 600 clients across defined contribution and defined benefit workplace pensions and self-invested personal pensions, with connections to more than 100 investment managers. It is structured as a UK life insurance company, which lets it wrap traditional and alternative assets in unitised funds. Motive is mostly paying for that wrapper: UK pension policy is pushing schemes towards private markets, and they need a way to hold them.
Phoenix bought Mobius in an off-market deal in 2019 and said the sale was the thirteenth exit from its 2016 fund. Neither side gives a price. The Motive Partners Mobius deal adds a regulated pension business to a firm whose wealth thesis, Motive says, centres on broadening private markets access for pension schemes and wealth platforms. Pension and wealth infrastructure has drawn large cheques in 2026, as the FNZ insider round showed, and Fintechbits tracks this deal flow in its State of Fintech Q3 2026 report. Lazard, Oliver Wyman, Proskauer and PwC advised Motive.
Mobius chief executive James Finch stays in charge. He said clients face “greater demand for private markets and more tailored retirement solutions”, and that demand is what Motive is buying into with the Motive Partners Mobius deal. Exchange to completion took about four and a half months, from 11 June to 27 October 2026, because Mobius is a regulated life insurer and needed regulatory approval for the change of control.
