Square announced on 18 September that Ideal Nutrition, a Florida prepared meal brand running 17 retail locations, has renewed and expanded its commitment to the platform as it works toward national franchise expansion. The Block subsidiary is positioning the company as proof that a brand can scale from a single store into a franchise system without leaving Square, which is the objection Square for Franchises exists to answer.

What Ideal Nutrition actually runs on Square for Franchises

The detail in this release is unusually specific for a customer announcement, and the specifics are the point. Ideal Nutrition produces roughly 150,000 meals a week from a West Palm Beach manufacturing facility, prices them at $8.49, and began franchising in January 2024 after opening its first retail store in 2019.

Across its 17 locations the company runs Square Point of Sale on Square Register, chosen partly because the hardware suits the standardised store design, alongside Square Handheld for mobile barcode scanning. Square for Franchises gives corporate leadership visibility across both company-owned and franchised stores while each franchisee manages a separate account. Delivery runs through Square’s native integrations with DoorDash, Uber Eats and GrubHub, which the company says has cut the work of updating a rotating menu of more than 40 dishes. Square Online handles same-day in-store pickup, and Square Payroll, Shifts, Loyalty and Marketing complete the stack.

The loyalty numbers are the strongest evidence

Since the start of 2025, Ideal Nutrition customers have accrued over 17 million loyalty points and redeemed more than 64% of them, which the company translates into upwards of 110,000 gifted meals. Email open rates run around 47%.

A 64% redemption rate is the number worth citing. Loyalty programmes typically run far lower, and low redemption means a programme is quietly accruing an unused liability rather than changing behaviour. High redemption means customers are engaging with the mechanics and coming back to use them.

Whether that generalises is another matter, and the honest answer is probably not. An $8.49 meal bought weekly is close to a subscription in purchase frequency. A restaurant with monthly visit frequency will not see those numbers, and prospects being shown this case study should discount accordingly.

Why Block needs this segment

Franchise operators have historically been the hardest segment for Square to win. The received wisdom is that Square is for small independents that eventually outgrow it and graduate to Toast, Lightspeed or a legacy enterprise vendor. Square for Franchises is the product answer to that, and Ideal Nutrition is the proof point.

The commercial logic behind the push is straightforward. Block needs Square’s gross profit growth to hold up while Cash App runs its own course, and larger multi-location sellers are the most reliable route to that. Bigger sellers process more volume, churn less and buy more of the software stack, which is exactly what Ideal Nutrition demonstrates by running payroll, loyalty, marketing and delivery through one login.

This is also not an isolated release. Square has published near-identical stories for Whit’s Frozen Custard at 100 locations and Cascadia Pizza returning to the platform after evaluating alternatives. Three franchise-focused customer stories in a short window is a campaign rather than a coincidence, and it signals where Block is directing its enterprise sales effort. The company has been expanding its regulated footprint in parallel, including an application for a national trust charter, and the broader pattern sits inside the shift toward embedded finance that is pulling software vendors into banking.

The quote that was negotiated

Founder Wolfgang Brunet, a former West Palm Beach police officer who started the business preparing his own meals for colleagues, says other companies have tried to win Ideal Nutrition over and Square has continued to earn its loyalty. That line is doing competitive work in a customer’s voice rather than the vendor’s, which is more persuasive and also clearly agreed in advance.

James Schonzeit, Square’s head of food and beverage, described Ideal Nutrition as one of the most advanced Square sellers. Both quotes point at the same message. Square can hold a sophisticated multi-location operator against active competitive pressure, which is precisely the doubt the segment has about the platform.

Whether Ideal Nutrition leaves Florida

The company expects to reach 20 locations before the end of 2026 and is evaluating markets outside Florida. That is the test. A Florida brand with 17 stores and three in construction is a regional success story. A brand operating in three states on Square’s franchise tooling is a reference customer that closes deals.

The other thread is the AI angle both sides flagged. Ideal Nutrition says it is exploring Square’s tools for store-level order forecasting based on sales trends and seasonal history. Forecasting perishable inventory is a real problem for a business producing 150,000 meals a week, and if Square can demonstrate measurable waste reduction there it has a sharper pitch than unified commerce.
