Dateline: SoFi Tech Solutions, spending research, 19 October 2026
SoFi Tech Solutions, the payments processing division of SoFi Technologies, said on 19 October 2026 that its Q3 2026 Debit Spend Index showed debit spend up 7.4% and transactions up 5.9% from the second quarter, with utility spend up 20.7% and more than 62% of debit transactions made digitally. Fintechbits compared the SoFi debit spend index with Fiserv’s Small Business Index for September 2026, which showed average tickets up 4.2% year over year while transactions fell for the eleventh straight month, so SoFi’s 5.9% rise in debit transactions points the other way on how often people are buying. The two measures use different bases, and neither alone settles the question.
What the Q3 2026 SoFi debit spend index found
Recurring bills grew fastest. According to the SoFi Tech Solutions release on BusinessWire, utility spend rose 20.7% quarter over quarter on 10.8% more transactions, and the average utility payment finished the quarter 17.2% above its June level. Fuel spend rose 9.9%, and fuel took a larger share of debit dollars than groceries, 6.3% against 5.6%.
Price did more work than volume in subscriptions and recurring billing. Spend there grew 9.7% on only 1.3% more transactions, pushing average transaction spend up 8.3%. Telecom spend rose 18.1%. Subscriptions’ share of all debit transactions slipped for a third straight quarter, from 16.1% to 15.4%.
Discretionary categories behaved differently. Experience transactions grew 12.9%, more than double the index’s overall transaction growth, while average experience spend fell 4.5%, so people went out more often but spent less each time. Back-to-school and college spending rose 40.3% on 21.2% more transactions.
Kathleen Pierce-Gilmore, president of SoFi Tech Solutions, said spending patterns reveal the trade-offs people face as price pressure persists.
How SoFi’s figures compare with Fiserv’s data
Fintechbits has tracked Fiserv’s monthly small-business data, including the August reading, when average tickets rose 3.0% year over year while transactions fell 1.8%. Fiserv’s September index continued the pattern: average tickets up 4.2% year over year and transactions down 2.0%, the eleventh straight monthly fall.
SoFi measures a different thing. Its figures are quarter over quarter, cover consumer debit cards processed on its platform, and include large billers like utilities and telecoms. Fiserv’s are year over year and come from small merchants. Even so, both agree that prices are pushing totals higher. They disagree on whether people are making more purchases.

Why the SoFi debit spend index needs a denominator
The price story in SoFi’s index is credible, and Fiserv’s numbers say the same thing. Utility, fuel and telecom bills rising faster than transaction counts is what a summer of higher prices would produce. The transaction growth is harder to read.
The release does not say how many cards, issuers or fintech clients sit behind the index, or whether that base changed between the second and third quarters. SoFi Tech Solutions processes for banks and fintechs, and if its client list grew during the quarter, transaction counts would rise even if no individual cardholder changed behaviour. The methodology note says the comparison is of aggregate data across two quarters, and it does not mention a same-client adjustment. Seasonality matters as well. A Q3 versus Q2 comparison captures summer travel and back-to-school, which the release itself identifies as drivers.
My view is that the category detail is useful and the headline growth rates should be read as directional only. The index is also marketing for SoFi Tech Solutions, which sells processing to banks and fintechs. SoFi’s banking arm runs its own payments experiments, which Fintechbits covered when SoFi moved its card program to SoFiUSD settlement in September.
Frequently asked questions
What did the Q3 2026 SoFi debit spend index show?
Debit spend rose 7.4% and transactions rose 5.9% from the second to the third quarter of 2026, according to SoFi Tech Solutions. Utility spend rose 20.7%, fuel spend rose 9.9%, and more than 62% of debit transactions were digital.
What data does the index use?
The index uses anonymized, aggregated debit transaction data processed through the SoFi Technology Solutions platform in July, August and September 2026, across more than 300 merchant category codes. Comparisons are quarter over quarter.
How does SoFi’s index compare with other spending data?
Fintechbits compared it with Fiserv’s Small Business Index for September 2026, which showed average tickets up 4.2% year over year while transactions fell for the eleventh straight month. SoFi shows debit transactions rising 5.9% quarter over quarter, so the two sources disagree on purchase frequency.
What to Watch Next
Fiserv’s October Small Business Index, which on its monthly schedule should appear in early November, will show whether small-merchant transactions fall for a twelfth month. If they do while SoFi’s next quarterly index again shows rising debit transactions, the gap is more likely to reflect SoFi’s platform growth than consumer behaviour. A disclosure from SoFi of a same-client growth rate would settle it.
Why this matters
Fintechbits compared the SoFi debit spend index with Fiserv’s September 2026 Small Business Index, which showed transactions falling for the eleventh straight month while SoFi shows debit transactions up 5.9% quarter over quarter. Both data sets agree that higher prices are lifting spending, with SoFi’s utility spend up 20.7% and recurring billing up 9.7% on only 1.3% more transactions. The open question is whether SoFi’s transaction growth reflects consumers or a larger client base.
