Dateline: Zip Co, product launch plan, 13 October 2026
Zip Co (ASX: ZIP) announced on 13 October 2026 that it plans to launch Zip Cash, a same-day cash loan of up to $500 for eligible US customers, with an initial rollout to select customers in eligible states during the 2026 holiday season, according to Zip’s release. The release, Fintechbits notes, gives no origination fee amount, no repayment term, no APR and no list of eligible states for Zip Cash, which are the four numbers that decide whether it is cheap short-term credit or an expensive one. Zip says more than 100,000 customers have already joined the waitlist.
What Zip Cash offers
Zip Cash moves Zip, which offers point-of-sale credit in Australia and the United States, from paying for a purchase at checkout to putting money in a customer’s bank account. Eligible customers may be able to borrow up to $500, with funds deposited into a connected bank account as soon as the same business day, according to the release. Each loan could include a flat origination fee that is disclosed before the customer accepts, and customers would be able to ask to change their repayment date.
The release says Zip Cash builds on Zip’s existing Pay-in-2 platform and keeps the same terms Zip markets for its installment products: no hard credit inquiry and no compounding fees. Loans are originated by WebBank and are subject to credit approval.
Zip also sets one hard rule. Customers with a missed payment will not be eligible for another Zip platform loan until the outstanding payment is resolved. The rule has two effects. It stops a borrower from stacking new Zip Cash loans on top of a missed one, and a single missed repayment can also lock that customer out of Zip’s pay-later checkout products.
The demand signal and the pitch
The waitlist number is Zip’s strongest data point. More than 100,000 customers signed up, including more than 40,000 in the first 72 hours, the release says. Customers cited fuel, everyday necessities and unexpectedly high bills as the moments when a small buffer would help.
Joe Heck, Zip’s US chief executive, framed the product as a fix for a timing problem. “A timing gap shouldn’t have to derail someone’s plans or force them into a complicated financial product with unclear costs,” he said. Zip also takes a shot at rivals, saying that unlike “some industry practices that break up a cash loan into multiple fee-generating parts or rely on tips,” Zip Cash is “one loan with transparent fees.”

Why the missing fee is the whole story for Zip Cash
Zip is right that the cash-advance market has a cost problem. Tips, express-delivery fees and subscription charges can make a small advance cost more than its headline suggests. A single flat fee, disclosed upfront, is a cleaner structure.
A cleaner structure can still produce an expensive loan. A flat fee on a small loan repaid over a short period can work out to a high annualised rate, and the release gives neither the fee nor the period. Zip calls the product transparent while publishing none of the terms a customer or regulator would use to compare it. That will need to change before the holiday launch, because the fee will be disclosed to each borrower anyway.
The strategic logic is sound. Zip’s US business has grown on installment payments at merchants, including deals Fintechbits covered such as Zip’s 300-store agreement with Rally House, and its own customer research has tracked how shoppers use credit, as in Zip’s survey on AI-assisted shopping. Cash loans let Zip reach the same customers between purchases. The risk is that Zip Cash pulls the company toward the payday-style lending its own release criticises.
Frequently asked questions
What is Zip Cash?
Zip Cash is a planned same-day cash loan of up to $500 for eligible Zip customers in the United States. Funds go to the customer’s connected bank account, and loans are originated by WebBank.
When will Zip Cash be available?
Zip says Zip Cash will launch first to select customers in eligible states during the 2026 holiday season, with broader availability to follow. More than 100,000 customers have joined the waitlist.
What does the Zip Cash announcement leave out?
The release, Fintechbits notes, gives no origination fee amount, no repayment term, no APR and no list of eligible states. Without those figures, borrowers cannot compare Zip Cash with other cash advance apps.
What to Watch Next
The first Zip Cash loan disclosure will settle the question. Once a fee and repayment period are visible to borrowers in the holiday rollout, the annualised cost can be calculated, and that number will show whether Zip Cash is priced like a pay-later product or like a payday loan.
Why this matters
The release, Fintechbits notes, gives no origination fee, repayment term, APR or list of states for Zip Cash, the same-day loan of up to $500 that Zip announced on 13 October 2026. More than 100,000 customers have joined the waitlist, and WebBank will originate the loans. The product takes Zip from checkout into general cash needs. The main risk is price: a flat fee on a short, small loan can still carry a high annualised cost.
